While on the river, it seems like Huck and Jim get along better when they are stealing, buying, and hunting to get food. They both seem to have the same idea in mind, since they both escaped their old lives. It was confusing when they came upon the robber's boat because I didn't understand why they didn't just leave and not come back if they knew the robbers would come back. Then I realized that they wanted to steal the robbers raft and keep their existing one. Its funny how Jim see's life as if he were to get caught at any moment, and Huck see's himself and Jim as kings of robbery. Huck's personality has developed a lot since the beginning of the book. He is becoming more and more independent and is making some very hard decisions that could affect his life forever. Also, when Huck said "Tom Sawyer wouldn't back out now, so I won't either" (Twain 67), I realized something. Huck always makes his decisions based on what Tom would do. I was confused on why he won't make decisions without thinking about what Tom would do.
On page 86, Jim talks to Huck about how he feels when people call him a Nigger and how it affects his life. It makes Huck feel pretty bad about the things he's said to Jim before. This made me realize that everyone should be treated the same because its not their fault they were born with different skin colors. I would have hated to be a black in this time period because of all the hard work and discrimination they faced on a daily basis. After reading this, I now have a different outlook on life in many different ways that I did not see before. For example, Huck said, "I wouldn't that one if I'd 'a' knowed it would make him feel that way" (Twain 86). This was interesting because I wouldn't think that Huck would change his mind or attitude towards a black like that. I think he did the right thing and agreed not to play any more tricks on Jim.
On page 89, a few men approach Huck and Jim on the raft and they question if Jim is white or black. Huck has to say white because the men were looking for four blacks that had escaped. Huck did not like being in this situation because he likes Jim, but he had to lie about his color because he did not want to get in trouble. I think this is very brave of Huck to lie about something as serious as catching a black man because they could come back and kill him. I questioned what would've happened to him if he would've got caught? It just makes you think about how strong a little boy like Huck can be in a situation like that. Also, I learned that Jim has a very strong personality and that he will never give up. Some takeaways are treat people the way you want to be treated and make decisions based on your values in life.
