In chapter 5, I think it is very interesting that Huck's Pap wants him to come "Down a Peg" because Huck had on better clothes than him. Why would he want his own son to look worst than he already does. It just does not make any sense to me. To go along with that, Pap is outraged that Huck is the first in the family to learn to read. Why wouldn't he be happy for Huck, as this is a pretty big accomplishment for him. Pap seems like a person who is very ignorant and does not care about other thoughts or feelings. Like when he said, "You think you're better'n your father, now, don't you, because he can't? (Twain 19) Most fathers would be proud that their son has the ability to read and write, but he seems jealous. Also, I was confused on how Huck got to be so distant from his Pap in the first place. It explains that his parents fought all the time, and how Huck went to the court and got new guardians.
On page 27, there are a few things that are interesting to the reader. Pap was talking about the government in so many bad ways it was unbelievable. He said things about how a black from Ohio was wearing way better clothes than from anyone around here. He was just so outraged with the government because of the things a black had that he did not. He hates the fact that a black has to be in the United States for 6 months before he can sold. I think that Pap is mad because he does not have all the things a black man has. Pap said, "...the country may rot for all me- I'll never vote ag'in" (Twain 27). These are very strong words against the government and it makes me wonder if he could get in trouble for being against the government.
I think it is very good for Huck to set out on an adventure down the river because he will get no where in life if he stays with his pap. Also, When Huck was setting sail down the river, I wondered how his Pap did not see him because he said that he could have stuck his gun out and hit him with the barrel. It was pretty brave of Huck to fake his own death and then just leave his hometown. Also, it was a very brave move by Jim to escape being a slave and go to Jackson Island. Next, It was very surprising that Huck dressed up as a girl and talked to a newcomer from the town. It is risky because what if someone recognized him. I can now see how Huck's personality is starting to develop and how brave he actually is. I know I wouldn't have been that brave in any of the situations Huck was in. Some main takeaways are be thankful for what you have and having an opinion is okay as long as you are not ignorant about it.
