After carefully examining the text in chapters 1-4, I have noticed many things that are questionable. For instance, As the book first started off, I did not quite know who exactly the narrator was. After reading a little more, I figured out it was Huckleberry Finn himself. Also, right away I noticed that the language used in this novel was different from any others I have read. It uses a ton of slang and phrases such as "by and by." Next, I noticed that Huck is always feeling restless because of the constant attempt from Miss Watson to improve his behavior. I noted things like the behavior towards blacks in this period of time. It was a completely different world from what we see today. Huck seems like he follows the vast majority of people and is prejudice against the blacks. For instance, Huck states "...that nigger was corked up and had to take a back seat" (Twain 6). In this society, if a white boy were to say that he would be yelled at for using such obscene language.
Unlike most of the children today, they are punished hard from their widows and parents for irrational behavior. This is very interesting because kids today think they can just do whatever they want when they want. Also, while reading in chapter 3, it was mentioned that there was a rumor going around that Huck's Pap was dead from drowning in the river. Huck said, "I knowed mighty well that a drowned man don't float on his back, but on his face" (Twain 12). Why couldn't a man float on his back? I did not quite know what to think about this because it seems like Huck did not really believe that he drowned in the river. If he was not dead then, where is he then? Then it talked about how he beat Huck and was a drunk all the time. This would explain the reaction Huck has to the rumors going around the neighborhood.
In chapter 4, I was confused on why Huck went to Thatcher and sold all his money from the event with Tom Sawyer just because he saw these devil footprints in the snow. Later on Huck finds his Pap in his bedroom, but this still does not explain why he went and cashed out his money. When Huck was talking to Jim, it really hit me how abused and how bad blacks were treated in this time period. I know that this is how they were raised, but it is just so much different from the way they are treated today. It is completely understandable why they were raised this way though. Some main takeaways from these chapter would are be a leader not a follower and only believe things that can be proven because sometimes it may not be true.
